We recently completed this built-in unit tailor-made for our clients’ family room and flat screen TV. It features a generous TV opening with slide-out shelf, an elegant, arched face frame and door detail, and a two-tiered top.

Topping-off the floor-to-ceiling center section is a large, wrap-around crown molding. We coped the new pieces into the room’s existing crown molding, and gave the same treatment to the baseboard. These steps “nestled” the unit in place seamlessly, as though it were part of the room’s design from the start. Our clients requested we further enhance the unit with a fine dentil molding to echo a detail on their nearby fireplace mantle.

The side units feature the same crown and dentil molding details. Here we held the cabinet tops six inches from the ceiling to create a two-tiered design. Our clients also requested we make the side units several inches shallower from the wall than the center section. We love the extra dimesion these touches bring, drawing together the unit’s elements with a comforting continuity of scale. The open bookshelves are adjustable in height to adapt to our clients’ display needs as they might evolve over time.

We added a few strategically placed holes and attractive grommets to allow the homeowners to run cables to their electronic components and wall outlets. By carefully creating routes for the wiring inside our cabinetry during installation, we are usually able to adjust to any A/V setup nearly invisibly.

Finished in white laqcuer, this project is as beautiful as it is functional. It provides a lot of closed storage and plenty of open shelving for books, photos and curios. Scroll down a few views!
