Repair & Refinish

A client recently brought in this amazing draw leaf table with extensive finish wear and damage. The table’s gorgeous, book-matched mahogany burl veneer top disappeared behind scratches, scuffs and staining. Sunlight exposure to the main table top had lightened the wood such that the precision-fit, pull-out leaves no longer matched in tone.

We hand stripped the damaged lacquer finish and made some minor repairs to the veneer. Netxt came re-coating with layer upon layer of pigmented polyurethane. After hand-rubbing and waxing, the table glows with a velvety smooth surface and deep, durable finish. The figured mahogany comes alive and the color between the leaves and main top is reunified. Occasionally a piece comes into the shop we all wish we could keep for ourselves. This table surely falls in that category! Our client will enjoy and take pride in this beautiful, versatile draw leaf table, a great find and a really fun project!

BEFORE: Note the scratches and scuffs on the “hideaway” leaves, as well as the considerable fading to the main table surface. The “two-tone” look was unintended by the original maker.

AFTER: This piece and it’s burl figuring absolutely shimmers, post refinishing. The hand-rubbed finish is as durable as it is gorgeous. New felt strips added beneath the table top will save the leaves from suffering any future scratches when hidden away.
